The history of the Tanegashima Scissors (Tanebasami) is deeply intertwined with that of Tanegashima Island, famously known as "the Land where Firearms were Introduced" to Japan. It is said that the scissors originated from the Chinese-style shears (Karahasami) that arrived on the island alongside the first guns.

While the island once flourished with blacksmiths, only a handful remain today. Among them, Mr. Shoji Umeki is the sole artisan who performs all forging steps entirely by hand, preserving this ancient, time-honoured tradition.

The Tanebasami are unique for their cutting mechanism, where the two blades gently rub against each other. On Tanegashima, they are highly valued as gifts because they symbolise the profound meaning of "pioneering a path forward with companions, friends, and one's life partner."

Since each pair is entirely handcrafted, demanding both immense labour and generational traditional artistry, please be aware that there may be a wait time for delivery depending on the timing of your order.

「鉄砲伝来の地」として知られる種子島に、鉄砲と共に伝わった唐鋏が、種子鋏の始まりとされています。当時は、たくさんいた鍛冶職人も、今では数人となり、中でも全ての工程を手作業で行う職人は、梅木昌二氏のみとなりました。

2枚の刃が擦り合い切るのが特徴の種子鋏は、「友人・知人といった仲間、そして人生の伴侶と共に道を切り拓く」という意味で、種子島では様々な贈り物として喜ばれています。

1本1本手造りの鋏は、作業時間と伝統技術を要するため、タイミングによっては入荷までお時間をいただきます。
